Why Hire a Painting Contractor?

Why Hire a Painting Contractor?

Painting contractor doing his project

When deciding on redesigning the look of your home, doing it yourself may seem the better option. You may feel that you know exactly what you want, so who better to execute it than yourself. However, the issues that can arise out of a DIY project are often not realized.

Painting your room yourself allows you to finish the task at your own pace. So, if a job needs to be done quickly, you can get it finished as soon as you want. However, if you have a full-time job, it can take months to complete. A contractor could take a few days as opposed to a few months. This also relieves the stress and pressure that decorating can cause. Preserve your free time for leisure activities with friends and family and let a trusted contractor carry out the task for you.

Carrying out a DIY project will also save money as you will only have to purchase painting supplies. That being said, the task of buying supplies is not a simple one. It can also result in multiple trips to the store. A contractor will do all the running around for you and will buy quality products. If you do it yourself, the job will not be up to the same standard as a professional. Not only this but if something was to go wrong, the average homeowner’s insurance might not cover it, whereas a contractor will have their own insurance.

Decorating can also be extremely hazardous if not done correctly. Working with ladders and solvents can be dangerous. A painting contractor knows how to handle these substances safely. Contractors have the equipment needed to handle these situations and to keep you and your family safe. They will also clean everything at the end, saving effort on your part.

Doing it yourself can seem like a simple job. However, it is not as easy as it seems. Picking the right contractor can allow for the task to be carried out efficiently and to the highest standard. HNM Painting is a reputable company which is known for the service they provide. With our skilled team of decorators and years of experience, you can finally get your home looking the way you envisioned.

Staining Wood Doors

Staining Wood DoorsYour door is the first thing a guest will see when they visit your home. It is a perfect chance to create a good first impression of your home. Doors are used heavily on a day to day basis, due to this, it is very important that your door is durable and that includes the finish that is on it. This is where door staining comes in. It can give your door a home an effortless lift.

You cannot just splash the stain onto the surface of the door, technique is crucial when carrying out staining. As with any other home project, preparation is the key. Here at HNM we understand that sometimes a DIY task like this can be daunting, so follow these carefully drafted tips and guidelines to ensure your staining project results in success!

Prior to attempting to stain your door, it is best to pick out a stain which is best for specific type of wood which your door is made out of. There are wide range of stains available on the market from solvent based to oil based, interior and exterior, it can all become somewhat confusing. However, once you have determined what type of wood you have, ask a professional from the store you intend on purchasing your stain from. The professional will be able to recommend a stain which will work best with the grain and produce the colour that you want.

Staining Wood DoorsSafety is important when carrying out this task so make sure you are equipped with protective eyewear, gloves, and breathing protection. The breathing protection is required whether or not you are doing this project inside or outside.

The next step is to remove the door from its hinges, you cannot properly stain a door while it is in use. Remove the door along with any locks, knockers, knobs or any other accessory which is attached to your door. We advise that you keep all the parts in an organised way so that you can attach them easily once you have stained your door. Once you have removed the door, lay it flatly in a sawhorse, if you don’t have one, you can use a workbench which will have the same purpose. This will stop the stain from dripping down when you apply it.

As your door has been exposed to elements such as dust, it is important to have a clean surface that you will stain. Sanding achieves this as it removes the dust whilst also opening up the fibres which will help the stain absorb easily. You can then use a tack cloth to remove any remaining dust from the surface of the door. We strongly suggest taking breaks during this process to make sure you are getting fresh air into your lungs, this is even more crucial if your area is not well ventilated.

Staining Wood Doors

We advise reading the manufacturer’s recommendations in the guide which you received with your stain. This will give you more specific guidance for your specific stain. As every tree is unique, every piece of wood will be unique too. We advise testing your stain on a portion of the door to ensure it produces the result you desire.

Now you have a clean canvas to work on, follow these steps to apply the stain:

Dip your lint free cloth which you have folded into a pad into the stain and allow excess to drip off into the bucket. When applying, ensure you use singular motions and apply even pressure. Ensure you are going along with the grain and allow the stain to fully saturate the surface. A few drips are normal, be sure to wipe it immediately with a soft cloth. Then allow the stain to dry fully. This can take between 6 to 10 hours.A peach like fuzz may form when the stain dries, however this is normal, you can use steel wool to remove this.

You can now repeat this process and apply as many coats until you achieve the colour that you desire. Ensure you do not touch the wood as it is drying because it will lead to imperfections. Once fully dried, you can use a bristle or foam brush to apply a finish. The best way to do this is in long even strokes, to allow for even coverage. You can use a cloth to wipe off the excess. We would advise following up with another coat to allow for a good finish. For the fixtures, simply press the stain on using a lint free cloth and allow it to dry. Repeat the process until you reach the desired colour.

Finally, you can reattach the door, it is crucial that you remove any dust or bristles left over from the brush at this point. Use the pieces you set aside to reattach the door. You are now left with a beautifully stained door, ready to impress anyone who visits your home.

The doorway is the passage way into your home, set the right first impression. To enhance the elegance and ambience of your home, contact HNM Painting at 843-263-2409, or e-mail us at info[at]hnmpainting.com

No Pressure in Pressure Washing

Pressure washing a wooden deck

Your patio, car and other property are exposed daily to a whole host of different elements; this can lead to a build up dirt, dust, mold and debris. This can completely mask and age the look of your property. This is where pressure washing comes in to restore your surface to its best form!

Power washing is a cleaning method that uses high-pressure mechanical water spray to remove layers of dirt off a variety of surfaces. It offers an easy solution to tough cleaning jobs, such as removing flaking paint or preparing a surface prior to painting. Doing this can ensure that your paint will last longer.

However, most homeowners underestimate the importance of being informed on how to use a pressure washer. If the wrong technique is applied, it can cause significant damage. Don’t make the mistake of likening a power washer to a toy water gun, the level of pressure the machine has could lead to serious harm to a person or property. So never point the machine at pets or other people.

Follow these tips to get the most out of your pressure washer and to get the job done right the first time!

No Pressure in Pressure Washing

Pressure Washer

So, how does one operate a power washer safely? Firstly, it is important to protect yourself. We advise whenever operating a power washer, that you wear safety glasses, gloves, and sensible shoes to avoid damage to the skin. Next, it is important to check that both water and electrical outlets are tightly secured at all times. Have a look over the machine to see if there are any obvious damages or cracks. If any cracks are present, the washer will not work properly.

There are a vast array of pressure washers available on the market. Be sure to pick one that is suitable for your needs and the scale of the job you intend to carry out. Every pressure washer is different in its operation. So, we suggest that you read the instructions and safety guidelines very carefully, this may seem time-consuming and is often overlooked by many people. However, failure to adhere to these can lead to damage to yourself and your property.

There are a few tips to bear in mind regardless of which power washer you have.

Be sure to choose the right nozzle. The nozzle you should use will depend on what type of cleaning job you are going to implement. As the nozzles vary with each pressure washer, it would not be possible to say which nozzle suits which surface. What we advise is that you try using the different nozzles on a small area of the surface to see which nozzle best suits. To avoid accidents as you are changing the nozzles, make sure that the nozzle is attached properly before attempting to use the machine.

No Pressure in Pressure Washing

Man does pressure washing at least 4 feet away from the area.

Once you have decided on a nozzle. Test your pressure washer. You can do this by standing 4 feet away from the target area you hope to clean. Move the wand side to side to check if the area is getting cleaned.  You could move closer to apply more pressure. That being said the key thing when operating the machine is to have patience and to use the correct technique. By applying too much pressure and not using a gradual motion, you run the risk of causing a break in the surface.

Now you can apply your detergent of choice, allow it time to soak into the surface for at least 3-5 minutes. This will ensure the soap latches onto the surface and the stain and lifts it out.

Now to use the pressure washer. Technique is crucial at this point. Random spraying will lead to areas left unwashed and streaks. These will be extremely visible once the surface has dried. So to avoid wasting time and an uneven look, spray horizontally from left to right in a slow sweeping motion. Start from the top of the area and work your way down this will minimize the risk of streaks and dripping. It is best to start at the lowest pressure and work your way up, especially when you are trying to clean windows. After cleaning the surface, give it enough time to dry before attempting to paint or apply anything over it.

Power washing can lead to extremely costly damage if done incorrectly. Don’t despair, HNM Painting is on hand to help relieve you of the pressure. Contact us anytime at 843-263-2409 or drop us an e-mail at info[at]hnmpainting.com.

Wallpaper Removal: Never An Easy Thing

You sit, staring at the walls surrounding your room and it occurs to you, exactly how long has it been since you’ve had the same wallpaper stuck on those four walls. The look of your room is outdated and dull. You then let your imagination take over and consider painting the walls to bring some much-needed life back into your room. Another thought then follows, how exactly are you going to remove this wallpaper which has pretty much embedded itself to your walls?

At first glance, you may think that that wallpaper removal is an easy task. However, when you start looking into it further, it dawns on you, this task is not going to be an easy one. You can’t simply peel the wallpaper like you would a banana. But do not lose hope! With the right planning, in conjunction with determining the right techniques for your specific wallpaper, you can accomplish what could be a messy task if not done correctly.

The first step would be to remove any furniture from the room. Move any furniture or fixtures that cannot be removed into the center of the room to increase your workspace. Once you have done this, cover them, so as to protect them.

Now it’s time to examine your outdated wallpaper to determine what best technique would be to remove the wallpaper. Materials such as vinyl, foil, liner, and fabric wall coverings in most cases will peel off easily. While other materials, such as the old style of flock wallpapers, require more time and effort. After determining what type of covering you currently have and want to remove, it would be beneficial to do a test run on a 1X1 square foot area to ensure the process and tools you are using, work for your wallpaper.

Wallpaper Removal: Never An Easy Thing

Removing wallpaper using a steamer

There are several wallpaper-removal techniques: steaming, dry-stripping, soaking and scraping.

Steaming can result in scalding if you are not sure on how to execute it. There are several things you can do to minimize the risk to scald yourself. We suggest wearing a protective rubber gloves, and a long-sleeved top. You should also, set aside a pan where you can place your steamer. Now the preparation is done, start steaming from the top of the wall. If the wall is too high, consider using a stepladder. Hold the steamer’s hotplate against the wall to soften the wallpaper. Following which, move the steamer away from the area you’ve just softened so that you can now peel the wallpaper off.

Wallpaper Removal: Never An Easy Thing

Stripping wallpaper using a putty knife

Dry-stripping is the easiest technique. However, do bear in mind that not all wallpapers are dry-strippable. In order to ‘dry strip,’ use a putty knife to lift the corners or the edge of the wallpaper gently. Continue this till all of the wallpaper has come off. There may be some adhesive that is left after this. You could use it for your next cover, but we would advise that you check with an expert to see if it is compatible with your next wallpaper.

If you also want to remove the adhesive backing, then the best technique for you would be soaking and scraping. Soaking and scraping involves mixing warm water with a special solution which is intended for wallpaper removal. Put the mixed solution in a spray bottle then spray it on the surface. This will soften the wallpaper.

Following this, scrape the soaked wallpaper with a taping knife or wallpaper scraper. If the paper is non-porous, roughen the surface first by using sandpaper or any perforating tool. This will allow for the solution to penetrate and dissolve the remaining adhesive. Once the entire covering is removed, use a sponge to wash the walls with either water, wallpaper-removing solution, or a non-phosphate cleaner. To finish things up, sponge and rinse your wall with clean water until all residues are out. You will be left with a perfectly clean canvas ready for your new ideas!

We would like to bring more life, not just into your walls, but also into your home. Remember that walls are the basic foundation of your home. We really want to be part of helping transform your thoughts into reality. If you need someone to brainstorm your ideas with, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Workers set the ceiling profile in the new flat

Workers installing a ceiling profile

Our homes are made up of more than just the four walls that surround it. Tilt your head back and look up, that’s your ceiling. It is the most exposed area of your room, yet, the least prioritized and more often than not forgotten when it comes to redesigning.

The look of your ceiling is just as important as your walls. Many people don’t realize how great a canvas it is to fill with intricate details. Just think of how many people go into old churches and are amazed by the interior design and the illustrations. Why is it that homeowners give such little importance to what is just over their heads. Your home could have the same effect on anyone who visits.

With the help of modern construction technology and the right painting contractor, re-doing your ceiling is no longer an impossible task. So why not take advantage of this and renovate the look of your home?!

And when it comes to textures, there are many options from which to choose.

Popcorn Ceiling

Red Popcorn Ceiling

Red Popcorn Ceiling

One of the most widely used finishes was the Popcorn Ceiling. Its popularity was at its peak between 1950 and 1978. It came to prominence due in part to its ability to hide imperfections and reduce noise.  It fell out of widespread use in the 1980’s partly because of Clean Air Act of 1978 and many formulations at the time containing asbestos.

Nothing dates a house quite like a popcorn ceiling. The good news is it’s very easy to remove. All you need to do is; spray the area with water and scrape it off with a knife or any scraping tool. However, if you suspect your popcorn ceiling may contain asbestos, then call an expert. They know how to remove asbestos-containing textures without spreading it through the home.

The Slap Brush Texture

Another commonly used finish is the Slap Brush. Its name is derived by the way it is applied. The contractor slaps the mud onto the area, with brushes specially made for this finish.

As a result, each ceiling will be unique. This technique can take quite some time, so many professionals use a hopper gun. Slap Brush texture can be directly applied to painted surfaces and can be an addition to any drywall surface.

The Mud Swirl Texture

The Mud Swirl is the most time-consuming and requires more workforce than any of the other techniques. The proper approach for mud swirling is to ensure that the ingredients do not dry too quickly.

Two people must work together to execute this technique. As the name implies, you and your partner should apply the mud one after the other in swirling motions to create the pattern. If correctly done, will leave half circles in the ceiling. We recommend you apply a very light sanding afterward to remove any imperfections.

The Skim Coating Technique

You could also use a skim coating to help improve the look of your room. Homeowners who use this technique will probably apply wallpaper afterward.

A skim coating is useful in areas with high humidity like kitchens and bathrooms. It can smoothen faulty taping or cover up prior painting mistakes. The skim coat process is useful mostly for drywalls.

HNM Painting Faux Painting Photo

Painting is fashion for walls.  The vibrancy of your room is dependent on the wall paintings you furnish it with. Combining faux painting with different finishes can make your room or space come to life. With this in mind, lets look at faux painting in more detail, to see just how it can make a major change in the style of your home!

Firstly, what is faux painting? it is a decorative paint finish technique that mimics the appearance of materials like stone, wood, marble or other, often natural materials. As a result, this technique can allow your room to have a trendy or dramatic feel. There are a vast range of options to choose from; the only limit is your imagination.

In fact, faux painting, like makeup contouring, hits two birds with one stone. If done correctly, it can mask imperfections whilst enhancing the end result. Playing with colors can create a picturesque view that hides discoloration. In addition to this, an unattractive crack can be transformed into a beautiful tree trunk or futuristic mural. You can work on blemishes by sponging paint over the area or by adding texture to the surface.
